The United States welcomes Mexico’s increasingly ambitious commitments to address climate change and advance our shared vision of making North America a clean energy powerhouse to drive job creation and economic prosperity. Mexico’s announcements at COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt of a significantly enhanced nationally determined contribution to limit greenhouse gas emissions and plans to double its generating capacity of renewable energy by 2030 are major steps forward. The United States is also working closely with Mexico to support its plans to reduce methane emissions in its oil and gas sector.
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard have received Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry five times in Mexico since October 2021, as we have collaborated to support our presidents’ goals of advancing a greener, cleaner North America and promoting renewable sources of energy while safeguarding our future and respecting each country’s sovereignty.
The United States looks forward to further cooperation with Mexico, in these and related areas, such as zero-emissions vehicles and critical minerals, to mitigate and adapt to climate change while enhancing North American economic competitiveness.
